A defining characteristic of Kenpei Yunde’s work is their powerful presence, despite the soft color palettes and contours. This is created by the numerous layers of paint which are then scraped off and polished, resulting in a unique blur and luster.

A representative series of Yunde’s work is the 110 paintings he created over a five-year period on the theme of the Japanese Constitution. During his research in Bhutan, which was inspired by his focus on “happiness as a human being,” he noticed how people cherish the simple connections between human beings. The unpaved roads and puddles, which became an important motif for the work, symbolize the choice to value living with one’s family over traveling far to accumulate greater wealth.
Today, he continues to expand on this theme, focusing on the question, “What is happiness for humans?”

The process of creating his works is characterized by the way he starts from the depiction of “soil” and proceeds as if he were cultivating it. After the “soil” is completed, rain, trees, and puddles are painted, carefully capturing a very human happiness that comes from being one with nature.

Kenpei Yunde continues to pursue expressions of happiness. Through his paintings, people are moved, being reminded of the things that everyone has but takes for granted.

1988年生まれ。既存のスタイルにとらわれず、平面と立体作品を制作している。幼少期の体験や経験がテーマになっていて、その愛らしいモチーフはアジア各国で受け入れられており、台湾、韓国、香港での個展やグループ展に参加している。

2024 令和5年度愛知県芸術文化選奨文化新人賞

Shooshie Sulaiman is currently recognized as one of the most important contemporary artists of Southeast Asia. Of both Malay and Chinese origin, the history of Southeast Asia, the culture of her homeland of Malaysia, as well as her personal memories and her own identity, serve as significant themes within her work. An almost mystical air permeates Sulaiman’s oeuvre, with works produced through diverse approaches such as drawings, collages, installations, and performances that at times appropriate natural elements from trees, soil, to water that are native to the land. Through them, the works inform viewers of the complex and inextricably connected relationship between human beings, nature, and art.

Shooshie Sulaiman is currently recognized as one of the most important contemporary artists of Southeast Asia. Of both Malay and Chinese origin, the history of Southeast Asia, the culture of her homeland of Malaysia, as well as her personal memories and her own identity, serve as significant themes within her work. An almost mystical air permeates Sulaiman’s oeuvre, with works produced through diverse approaches such as drawings, collages, installations, and performances that at times appropriate natural elements from trees, soil, to water that are native to the land. Through them, the works inform viewers of the complex and inextricably connected relationship between human beings, nature, and art.

During COVID, he continues to work from an interest in the self that has gone inward,
memories of family and the past, and by repeatedly chewing on the same subject
matter and enjoying the slight changes that arise in the process.

In recent years, he has been working on a series of still-life paintings ‘on the table’, in which objects from his living space are placed on the table.
The apple, which has appeared frequently in his work since the COVID, was initially treated as a symbol of wisdom.
Recently, however, I have been depicting it as a motif meaning that the eugenic philosophy (the wise ones, the species that can evolve to suit the environment survive) is not necessarily correct, and that it is a hypothesis because people have wisdom, and that it was ‘just a coincidence and we were lucky’.
The snake, which also appears frequently in Western art, is sometimes treated as a symbol of rebirth because of its repeated moults, and is depicted from the hopeful perspective that such a thing could happen in the case of the COVID. It is also inspired by the fact that “Adam and Eve, the first humans, were seduced by the serpent to eat the fruit of wisdom”, which is also associated with the apple fruit.

Finally, I would like to share with the viewer some memories of the pleasant events that take place on the table.
